Cleaning Your Dentures

Denture RepairsTips: Always brush your denture over a sink full of water, or over a sink lined with a facecloth or towel. This way, if you drop your denture, the impact will be less severe.

1) Rinse your dentures thoroughly to remove loose food particles. Use cool or warm water. But never use hot water - it can warp your dentures.

2) Brushing too vigorously, using an abrasive paste, or brush with hard bristles each bring their own problems. The dulling of your artificial teeth, premature wear and tear of your dentures, or thinning of the acrylic lining which affects the fit of your dentures. An acrylic surface that has been scratched by an abrasive substance easily absorbs saliva, which carries food particles that cause stains and allows bacteria to stick to the surface.

3) It is also recommended that you gently brush your tongue, gums and the roof of your mouth with a moistened, soft-bristle brush. This daily one-minute massage stimulates your circulation and tones your gum tissue, while ridding your mouth of bacteria.

4) Always rinse your denture thoroughly under warm running water before putting it back in your mouth or before soaking. Making this a habit will save you from swallowing any cleaning solution, as well as from contaminating your soaking solution.

5) To give your mouth and extra, fresh clean feeling, rinse with a non-alcohol based mouthwash several times a day. This also helps keep your breath fresher longer. It is also recommended that you rinse your mouth frequently to rid of proliferating bacteria.

6) Rinsing your mouth with salt water can have an appreciable therapeutic effect.

7) Never bleach your dentures it can change the colors of the gum and acrylic and bleach do not mix.

Soaking Dentures

At night, dentures should soak in water with a proper denture cleaning solution, be sure to clean your denture with a proper denture brush.  Keep full or partial dentures in water when not in the mouth.
